Here are some common misconceptions about the nail business today:
1 Nail Technicians earn a lot of money before tip.
The average pay for a nail tech is around $20,000, this is without owning a business or providing other services. So, if they are just starting out or only offer nail services, they are living mostly off of tips instead off of their check. The low pay makes living off checks difficult for technicians because customers often decide not to tip so technicians end up having to wait for their checks. This pushes them to decide between lowering charges to accommodate for their customers or charging enough to support them and accurately values their art whether or not customers tip.
2 Nails need “time to breathe”.
However, nails do not and cannot breathe. Nails are (about 100 layers of dead keratin cells) completely replaced in three to six months with the help of oxygen and nutrients carried through your blood, not allowing them to breathe. You are allowed to get your nails done all year long if you please. Believe me, I plan to get my nails done as often as I used to now knowing that nails can’t “breathe”.
3 Nails should be soaked prior to a manicure.
When a doing a manicure at home or having a technician soak your nails prior to a manicure, the nail bed soaks up water which hinders the nail polish from fully adhering to your nails, this can be a waste of your time and money. Nails can also absorb water which can highly increase your risk of infection and lead to chipping of the polish soon. If you are not a professional, do not cut your own cuticles and soak them afterward. If you cut your cuticles incorrectly, you could harm your body by making it more susceptible to bacteria. The cuticle, like eyelashes, acts as your body’s natural defense against infection, so leave it up to the professionals.
